Not Sure About Your Skin Type? Here Are Four Easy Steps To Identify Yours

Taking care of your skin is absolutely imperative, and you should approach it meticulously and thoughtfully. But does every skincare routine need ten different steps to be followed? Absolutely not! The first step to getting your skincare right is to understand your skin type and what works best for it.

However, skincare items don't have a magical one-size-fits-all elixir, so you should first  understand the different types of skin and work on your skincare routine accordingly to take care of your skin needs.

Different Skin Types

When it comes to skin care, most of us tend to use and purchase items that we barely have any idea about. In fact, most of us are guilty of buying products either due to their popularity or due to certain ingredients that sounded fancy. But are you sure they will suit your skin? This is exactly why you should know your skin type and the different concerns you want to target, so that you can select products that are custom fitted for your skin and can help you get great results.

On this note, let’s help you understand the four major skin types and how to identify which one is yours.

How to identify skin types

Step #1

Wash your face with a gentle face cleanser. Use a mild formula that isn’t too harsh on your skin.

Step #2

Pat dry your face with a soft towel and do not apply anything on your skin.

Step #3

After an hour or so, take a clean thin tissue and spread it evenly across your face. Dab your skin gently.

Step #4

Take a look at the tissue paper and feel the nature of your skin also.

How to determine the results

  • Does your face feel greasy with a noticeable shine, and your tissue feels smudged and oily - You have Oily skin.
  • Does your skin feel tight, dry, and slightly flaky and irritated, along with traces of some flakes on the tissue paper - This means you have Dry skin.
  • Does your skin feel oily on the T-zone, with your nose shining and your cheeks feeling normal or dry? Is your tissue paper smudged with oil but only your T-zone is glossy?. - This implies you have Combination skin.
  • If your skin does not feel excessively dry or excessively slick, and the tissue paper comes out clear - It means you have Normal skin.

What do these skin types truly mean?

    • Oily Skin

Skin with an oily complexion tends to have a persistent shine, as oil production increases around the face and neck. Too much oil production can clog your pores, which can lead to breakouts and acne.

The most common skin concern for oily skin is comedones, which develop when dead cells, dirt, and oil are trapped in the pores. However, one advantage of oily skin is that it ages slowly, since the natural oils protect the skin, which delays the ageing process.

Skincare tips: Look for water-based, matte formulas that are lighter and more hydrating. Regular exfoliation with ingredients such as Salicylic Acid, using an alcohol-free toner and double cleansing can help remove impurities and excess sebum.

Avoid excessive use of comedogenic cosmetics that can clog pores and cause inflammation.

    • Dry skin

Dry skin is a skin type that can feel tight, fragile, or even unpleasant on occasion. Skin elasticity will, in general, be low for those having dry skin, prompting inconsistency or irritation. This happens because of the absence of normal oil production, which is affected primarily by our hereditary qualities, as well as factors like hormonal changes, climatic changes and lifestyle changes. One benefit of having dry skin is that your pores are smaller, so  your skin looks less oily, and is less inclined to breakouts.

Skincare tips: It is important to compensate for the lack of natural oils and lubricants by using products that have an oily or creamy base. Using humectants will help the skin regain its natural moisture and strengthen its barrier. Choose face oils that contain oleic acid such as Avocado Oil and Sweet Almond Oil.

    • Combination Skin

Combination skin is oily on the T-zone (brow, nose and jaw) and drier around the cheeks. The oilier parts of the skin are caused because of an overproduction of sebum, though the drier parts need sebum and fundamental lipids. This is a tricky skin type as various issues should be addressed at the same time to accomplish ideal skin balance.

Skincare tips: For the oily parts of your face, use an exfoliator and a light gel moisturiser to avoid clogging pores. For the dry parts, use a cream-based moisturiser to hydrate and nourish the skin.

    • Normal skin

Normal skin is certainly surprisingly easy to handle, as it is the ideal mix of not excessively sleek or dry skin. Both dampness and sebum levels are even, prompting fine pores, great blood circulation and an even complexion. Even the occasional breakout or period of dryness goes away quickly.

Skincare tips: With your skin not too oily, dry or sensitive, you can experiment with newer products and formulas without causing a negative reaction. However, keep your skin protected by cleansing, hydrating, and applying sunscreen every day.

Frequently Asked Question on Types of Skin

    1. What skin type is best?

The term "normal" typically refers to a well-balanced skin that is not too oily or too dry. Healthy skin is termed "eudermic". On the other hand, dry skin can look dull and tight while oily skin can make it prone to breakouts.

    2. Which skin type is best - oily or dry?

Oily skin, has much larger pores and is thicker. This provides extra cushion or padding to the skin. However, dry skin tends to be thinner, pores are smaller, and skin appears smoother. But fine lines and wrinkles appear more pronounced. We’d say neither of these skin types are better over the other, but if taken care of in the right way, both of these can be termed healthy with time.

    3. What are the basic skin types?

      • Normal skin type
      • Oily skin type
      • Dry skin type
      • Combination skin type
